Bariatric Surgery and Medical Weight Loss Treatments for Obesity in South Florida Clinic
Obesity is a complex, clinical disorder with many contributing factors. It doesn’t happen overnight, nor can it be overcome within a short period of time. Our Medical Weight Loss and Bariatric Surgery Program offers a complete range of services and dedicated expertise to help obese individuals succeed in reaching their weight-loss goals.
The Laparoscopic Adjustable Band, or Lap-Band, is a small adjustable band made of silicone rubber that is wrapped around the upper portion of the stomach. The band decreases the functional size of the stomach, which means that after eating only a small amount of food you will feel full. It works by turning the stomach into an hourglass shape — the food you eat quickly fills the pouch, then empties very slowly through the constriction created by the band, just like sand passing through and hourglass. The band is adjustable and can be personally sized to each patient’s needs.
Four to six weeks after surgery, you will return to Miami Bariatric and Plastic Surgery MD clinic to have your band inflated. The Lap-Band is inflated by injecting saline through an access port located underneath the skin on your stomach. If your band is ever too tight or too loose, all you have to do is return to the clinic for an adjustment. Lap-Band surgery is performed laparoscopically, which means surgeons will make five or six small incisions in the abdominal wall.
Here is what you can expect before your surgery:
Educate yourself on what to expect and have all your questions answered by the doctor before the Lap-Band surgery. Knowledge can help your recovery. Make sure your family and friends know what to expect. Your will need a support system and your immediate family will be the most important support to you. Have a supply of foods you will need in the days/weeks immediately after the surgery. Lean out your diet to get your body ready for eating a smaller volume of food and a lower calorie diet. Plan to have people help with cleaning, laundry and other day-to-day tasks, while you fully recover. Compile recipes so you are prepared to cook for you and your family after weight loss surgery. Doing research ahead of time helps ease the transition. Prepare yourself mentally for all the changes that are going to happen in your life, especially your relationship with food.
